The office of postgraduate studies at Iran University of Science and Technology was established in 1984, where it admitted its first master’s students to the School of Electrical Engineering, and later to the schools of Civil, Industrial, and Metallurgy and Materials Engineering. In the following years, along with an increase in admission capacity, other master’s programs, including the School of Mechanical Engineering (1988), and the School of Mathematics (1989) were established.

Along with scientific advances in the university, the postgraduate programs' developing process continued, and the first doctoral degree program was established in 1990 at School of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering, marking the first Metallurgy and Materials doctoral degree in the country. Subsequently, Electrical Engineering and Civil Engineering admitted students to doctorate degrees.

The office of post graduate studies at IUST has taken considerable steps in tracing, strengthening and developing its Master’s and Ph.D programs. Correspondingly for its developments in graduate studies, IUST was selected as the best among 82 Iranian universities in 1995.
