IUST Strongly Condemns the Airstrike on the University (Official Statement)

Statement by Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST)
Condemning the US-Israeli Airstrike on the University

In the Name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful
In the early morning of March 28, 2026, a cowardly airstrike by the American-Zionist aggressor directly targeted the research and educational buildings of Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST), resulting in serious destruction of several university buildings. This assault marks yet another blatant chapter in the ongoing crimes of global arrogant powers against the foundations of science and humanity.
IUST, with a legacy of nearly a century of scientific excellence, stands as a pillar of knowledge production and specialist training—not only for Iran but for the broader benefit of humanity. Moreover, IUST hosts international students from various countries.
Any attack on academic institutions constitutes a grave violation of international laws, including the Geneva Conventions and UNESCO conventions on the protection of educational facilities during armed conflict.
This inhumane act comes less than a week after the tragic assassination of Professor Saeed Shamghadri, a distinguished faculty member of IUST, along with his son and daughter, who were terrorized in the bombing of their home. His loss, combined with the direct bombardment of his university, exposes the true nature of the inhumane American-Zionist enemy—an enemy that cannot tolerate Iran's scientific progress.
The Israeli regime, whose history is marked by aggression, occupation, and land grabbing, has a well-documented record of attacking universities, including the recent airstrikes on Isfahan University of Technology during March 26–29, 2026. This attack on IUST is neither the first nor will it be the last—unless the international community finally takes meaningful action.
It must be emphasized that these attacks were carried out in the midst of ongoing negotiations, while war has been forced upon Iran. Our country has never been the aggressor; Iran is the victim of systematic aggression by the United States and the Israeli regime.
IUST strongly condemns this terrorist act and declares that such desperate attacks will never stop the wheels of scientific development in Iran. The university urgently calls upon the international community, the UN, UNESCO, the ICC, all global universities, and human rights organizations to:
  1. Unequivocally condemn this airstrike on a civilian university as a war crime.
  2. Impose sanctions on the perpetrators and commanders responsible for these attacks.
  3. Take immediate action to prevent further targeting of educational institutions in Iran.
  4. Raise public awareness against the militarization of attacks on higher educations.
The silence of the international community in the face of such atrocities will only encourage more war crimes against science, education, and humanity, while undermining the very legitimacy of these international bodies in the eyes of the world's people.

Joint Statement by Iranian Universities to the Global Academic Community on Condemning Attacks on Universities and Academicians

 | Post date: 2026/04/1 |
Condemning US-Israeli Attacks on Iranian Universities and Academicians
Addressed to: The Global Academic Community
We, the undersigned Iranian universities of technology, issue this statement to alert our colleagues worldwide about the systematic attacks by the United States and the Israeli regime against Iranian universities and academic personnel.
Direct military strikes have targeted Iranian universities in March 2026, including:
       - Shiraz University (Faculty of Pharmacy)
       - Isfahan University of Technology
       - Urmia University (Science and Technology Campus and Veterinary Teaching Hospital)
       - Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST)
These attacks reveal a pattern of aggression against the sanctity of higher education in Iran.
Just days before the airstrike on IUST, Professor Saeed Shamghadri, a distinguished faculty member of IUST, along with his son and daughter, were assassinated in a strike on their home. The killing of a professor and his children, followed by the bombing of his university, exposes the true nature of these acts: a systematic assault on science, education, and innocent life.
The assassination of scientists has continued. We receive daily reports of martyred academicians—students and professors—from universities across the country. These actions violate international law, including the Fourth Geneva Convention (Additional Protocol I), and the Safe Schools Declaration (2015). Universities are sanctuaries of intellectual freedom. Targeting them attacks the very foundation of progress and undermines the future of entire generations. As managers of scientific institutions in Iran, we draw the attention of our global colleagues to these crimes. If these crimes are not condemned today, they will await academic environments in other countries tomorrow.
We urgently call upon all universities and academic associations worldwide to:
  1. Condemn attacks on Iranian universities as war crimes.
  2. Recognize the deliberate targeting of academic personnel and educational facilities.
  3. Stand in solidarity with the Iranian academic community.
  4. Demand accountability from the perpetrators and their commanders.
Let us reaffirm our shared commitment to stability, education, and the protection of intellectual institutions worldwide. Silence in the face of these atrocities will only encourage more war crimes against science, education, and humanity.

Joint Statement by Iranian Universities to BRICS Network on Protecting Academic Centers

 | Post date: 2026/03/30 |
Dear Members of the BRICS Network University,
We write to express our deep concern and condemnation regarding the direct attacks on two Iranian universities Isfahan University of Technology and Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST)—during March 26–29, 2026. These attacks are not only a violation of the sanctity of academic institutions but also a grave provocation against the principles of peace, knowledge, and human dignity.
Tragically, just days before the airstrike on IUST, one of its distinguished professors, Professor Saeed Shamghadri, along with his son and daughter, were terrorized in a separate strike by the Israeli regime. The deliberate targeting of a university professor and his family, followed by the direct bombardment of his own institution, xposes the true nature of these acts: a systematic assault on science, education, and innocent life.
Universities are not battlegrounds; they are sanctuaries of intellectual freedom, where scholars, students, and researchers work tirelessly to advance humanity through discovery, innovation, and critical thought. To target such institutions and their academic community is to attack the very foundation of progress and to undermine the
future of entire generations. Scientific institutions are centers of connection and interaction for human society, and they must remain within the sphere of our collective support and concern, free from political biases. An attack on a university in any country is an attack on our shared values.
Throughout history, from the distant past to the present, the world has witnessed attacks on scientific institutions.
Today, despite existing international laws and principles, we must stand firm against such uncivilized actions. As a scientific community, we pose the following critical questions in response to this situation:
− Can we remain silent about attacks on universities under the pretext of neutrality or political complexities?
− Does selectively applying the law not logically lead to the discrediting of the shared principles of human society?
We respectfully invite our partner universities within the BRICS Network University to stand in solidarity with the Iranian academic community and to unequivocally condemn these attacks. Let us reaffirm our shared commitment to stability, education, and the protection of intellectual institutions worldwide.
Sincerely,
− Amirkabir University of Technology (AUT)
− Isfahan University of Technology (IUT)
− Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST)

Statement by IUST on the Recent Aggression Against the Islamic Republic of Iran

 | Post date: 2025/06/22 |
The illegitimate Zionist regime of Israel has once again exposed its inhumane and aggressive nature by carrying out a cowardly nighttime assault on cities and civilian areas within the sovereign territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran—an act that constitutes a clear violation of international law.
This unlawful and brutal aggression which started on Jun 14,2025 has resulted in the killing of a number of innocent civilians, including women and children, as well as several prominent scientists of our country. Such actions have once more revealed the regime’s disregard for human rights and international norms.
Iran University of Science and Technology extends its sincere condolences to the noble people of Iran and to the esteemed families of the martyrs. The university expresses its strong support for appropriate and resolute measures in response to this unlawful aggression, in the interest of regional peace and justice.
